May 21th. The Second Annual Campo, Lake Morena Disaster Drill.

A Learning Experience

Saturday morning, May 21th, the Mountain Empire Disaster Defense Team and Mountain Empire CERT Teams, conducted their second annual disaster drill. The primary mission of this years drill was to assist the San Diego Humane Society and the Animal Rescue Reserve with an animal rescue training session. Using the RACES ECHO III communications van, Amateur Radio and Humane Society radio operators dispatched animal rescue scout vehicles and horse trailers to six local ranches to practice loading and unloading horses. After the loading unloading operation the units went to the Flying A Ranch, acting as an animal rescue site, to simulate checking in the rescued animals.

At the Campo Community Center the Campo, Lake Morena Disaster Preparedness Committee and CERT Team setup the center as a disaster relief center to test our logistics procedures and provide public education to citizens of the area. The Border Patrol Explorer Scouts assisted in traffic control around the center and at the Animal Rescue Staging area located in the Thrift Shop parking lot.

Local first Responders and Law Enforcement units monitored the drill and provided important feedback as to how we were doing. Agencies present included, the Campo Fire Department, CDF, CHP, SDSO and Border Patrol. After the Drill CDF Chief Pete Scully presented a wildfire safety program to all drill participants.
